Do You an EV Charging Station?

With a home EV charger installation by W3 Electric, you can be self-sufficient. You won’t have to lean on public charging stations at all. Plus, you won’t have to stick with that job you can’t stand just because they have a charging station you can use. Unless you have convenient and accessible options close to home, an EV charger at home is essential for any electric vehicle owner.

Yes, you can expect your utility bills to take a hit now that you charge a vehicle for about eight hours every night. However, the expense of increased electrical usage pales in comparison to how expensive (and inconsistent) gas can be. Comparatively, you will still be saving money versus a car that relies on gas. Electricity is a very stable resource with stable pricing, so you can more easily plan for your fuel expenses, as well.

How to Maintain an EV Charger

Maintaining an electric vehicle charger is essential to ensure its proper functioning and longevity. Here are some general maintenance tips:

Regular Inspection:

  • Periodically inspect the physical condition of the charger for any signs of wear, damage, or corrosion.
  • Check the cables, connectors, and charging plug for any fraying, cuts, or other visible issues.

Clean Connectors:

  • Keep the charging connectors clean and free of dirt, dust, and debris.
  • Use a soft brush or cloth to remove any buildup on the charging contacts.

Verify Cable Integrity:

  • Ensure the charging cable is in good condition, without any exposed wires.
  • Replace damaged cables promptly to avoid electrical hazards.

Update Firmware:

  • If your charger has firmware that can be updated, check for and install any available updates.
  • Updated firmware may improve performance and address potential issues.

Check for Software Updates:

  • If your charger is connected to a network or has smart features, check for software updates to the app or software interface.
  • Keep the software up-to-date for optimal performance.

Inspect Mounting Hardware:

  • If the charger is wall-mounted or has any supporting structures, ensure that all mounting hardware is secure.
  • Tighten any loose bolts or screws as needed.

Ensure Proper Ventilation:

  • If the charger has cooling fans or vents, make sure they are clear of obstructions.
  • Good ventilation helps prevent overheating.

Test Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI):

  • If your charger is connected to a GFCI circuit, test it regularly to ensure it is functioning properly.
  • GFCI protection helps prevent electric shock.

Follow Manufacturer Recommendations:

  • Refer to the charger's user manual for specific maintenance guidelines provided by the manufacturer.
  • Follow any recommended schedules for inspection and maintenance tasks.

Weather Protection:

  • If the charger is located outdoors, ensure it is designed for outdoor use and follow any weatherproofing guidelines provided by the manufacturer.
  • Take precautions during extreme weather conditions.

Professional Inspection:

  • Periodically, consider having a qualified electrician or technician inspect the charger, especially if you notice any unusual behavior or if it's been in use for an extended period.

Remember that the specific maintenance requirements may vary depending on the make and model of your EV charger. Always refer to the manufacturer's guidelines for the most accurate and up-to-date information. Regular maintenance helps ensure the safety and reliability of your EV charging equipment.

What are the Benefits of an EV Charger Installation at Home?

There are a number of reasons to call W3 Electric for home EV charger installation besides convenience. With an EV charger installation, you will boost the value of your home, power your electric vehicle for less money, and charge your vehicle faster. Best of all, by using electricity instead of gasoline, W3 Electric’s installation helps you go green, too!

Which EV Charger Should You Get?

W3 Electric can install two different types of home charges for your EV一Level 1 and Level 2 chargers.

Level 1 chargers use a relatively small amount of power, and they’re very inefficient when it comes to charging your vehicle. With W3 Electric’s Level 1 charger, you can expect to wait 30 or so hours before your car is fully charged and ready to go. The big plus with Level 1 chargers is that they generally do not require professional installation. Unfortunately, they won’t do you much good once you have one.

Do You Need to Upgrade Your Electrical Panel?

All Level 2 EV chargers need a 240V connection to function. However, W3 Electric also recommends that your electrical circuit rates for 25% greater amperage than your charger’s output.

So if the charger you’re interested in is rated at 40A, your breaker should be rated at 50A. You will also need an empty slot in your breaker. If your setup doesn’t fulfill these three requirements, you will need to invest in a higher-capacity electrical panel.

What is the Best Location for an EV Charging Station?

If you want an EV charger installation, you want convenience. And for the ultimate convenience, you most likely want W3 Electric to install your charger inside your garage or just outside by your driveway. We can make that happen!

Just remember that not all chargers are rated for outdoor use, but there are options available. We can work with you to find the best spot possible. If for whatever reason, you decide to move out in the future, W3 Electric can work with you to remove the charger, so you can take it with you to your new home.
